ALIGNING WHO YOU ARE WITH WHAT YOU DO: DESTINY'S JOURNEY TO A FULFILLED CIVILIAN IDENTITY

Written by Georgia Lee Arts

When Army veteran Destiny decided to leave her role in medical laboratory services, she faced a question so many veterans ask themselves: What’s next? Destiny had spent years in a structured role as a medical laboratory specialist, part of the Army’s health services. Although she took pride in her work, the lab wasn’t where her true passions lay, and as her transition out of the Army approached, she was ready for a new career path but unsure how to find it.

Destiny’s situation isn’t uncommon; many transitioning veterans struggle to pinpoint their next steps, especially when their military role doesn’t align with what excites them. As an ESTP in the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Destiny thrived in dynamic environments that valued her adaptability, spontaneity, and quick-thinking skills—traits that weren’t fully tapped in a traditional lab setting.

Unsure of her strengths in the civilian world, Destiny worked with Elysian Dream® and explored fields that complemented her personality, skills, and values. As she navigated this exploration process, she discovered a path in project management, where her ESTP traits gave her a natural edge. Now, Destiny finds herself working towards certifications and training in a role that feels both personally and professionally fulfilling, allowing her to live with a renewed sense of purpose.

Destiny's journey demonstrates that transition is not only about moving from one job to another but discovering alignment between who you are (personal) and what you do (professional). This alignment is essential for post-service success and fulfillment. Destiny is one example of military-to-civilian transition success.
